My apologies for not being clear -- I went to Search to locate all the event records with the substituted character. There the field is called Events: Comments. When I went to Search and Replace, I had assume (always a bad sign) that the field would be called the same. Notes I associate with, well, Notes. At any rate the correction worked, but why it occurred in the first place is still one heck of a puzzle. It actually did not originate from a GED import -- all these changes are in event notes that I typed into the file myself. I did export to a new family file recently to try and clear a massive RIN numbering problem that also appeared out of nowhere. Perhaps that is at the bottom of it, but it would still point to something Legacy generated, as it went out and right back in, all in Legacy only format. I generated a gedcom to see if Legacy was recording the correct character code, but displaying it incorrectly or if the code was being altered for some reason. It appears, from the test, that the former is true - or at least was, as the last attempt I did produced the correct results. I would be happy to blame my machine for this madness, but at least one other person has been able to duplicate it and I have had no problems in any other program -- Illustrator, PageMaker, WordPerfect, Acrobat, Fontograph -- that is heavily involved with type and text manipulation, nor in PAF or GenVeiw. I am running the latest, Deluxe. When I go to the events screen for a person, it shows the name of the event and then location/notes. The add event also shows event - date - place - notes. Don't know where you are seeing comments. I have a feeling your problem originated with the gedcom import and that something went awry there. Since you can successfully search and replace and get the proper characters to show up in the event note section, it would seem that the problem isn't that it recognizes a different set of characters but that a problem occurred elsewhere.
