Andy, even though it was from your next door neighbour, it doesn't come
straight to your house. It travels from his computer to your neighbour's
ISP, through their servers, then through a "path" to your ISP's servers,
then to your PC. On that "path", or through the ISP's servers is where the
virus could have been picked up. Even though the message almost appears
instantly it does travel a tortuous path before you receive it. The phone
lines are only the carrier and have no ability to store anything.
