My computer is also completely free of virus (now! but read on!); using
up-to-date ViruScan Online as well as a backup real-time - deciding I can't
be too careful. I received the SirCam worm via another message board's
reply...and it was insidiously "smart": I never double-clicked it, or even
opened in WordPad, anything else. Simply saved off to my hard drive so that
I could take to work on diskette - suspecting a virus due to strangeness of
receiving an attachment with strange extensions - since my employer (a local
phone co) is also my ISP, and this apparently came in across OUR server
without triggering anything either.

While there was no damage, there was some lengthy cleanup...and I suspect
the average user wouldn't even know it! The point is: some of these
'viruses' are so advanced it almost doesn't matter if your computer, the
sender's, or the server's "allows" viruses or attachments! The phone lines
CAN allow it through, and 'dirty' phone lines can temporarily 'disguise' a
virus-infected attachment. This took some working through, even for my
company - which deals with this stuff on a regular basis.

In my case, the text accompanying the attachment was eerily related to the
correspondence contained in the email it attached itself to. So, while I
haven't become overly paranoid, it DOES pay to be wary of ANY attachment: 1)
you're not expecting, or 2) from someone you don't know, or 3) looks in any
way 'odd'.

Lastly: DELETE IT - don't save it! Better safe than sorry. Took about 6 hrs
to 'clean up' from this worm....which I thought I had taken all precautions
against!
