Jerald's suggestions are well thought out but I submit that Mary ??? is as
good. It meets every positive in his note except 2), which I think is
confusing, and 6) because it ELIMINATES the need for an explanatory note -
"Doggone if I know" is obvious!

Suppose you don't know the man's last name, then must you show Mr. John
"Pocahuntas" - or whatever the female's last name is? If you run a list of
prefix titles looking for Dr., Rev., CDR, etc., the bulk of the list is Mr.
and Mrs. You also have to know to presume that "Mrs." means that he didn't
marry his first cousin. If I want a list of people whose last names are
missing, there would be none with his method. I understand there are
workarounds for each of these problems, but there is also a workaround to
post plain text................

I know not what course others may take but, as for me, give me ??? or (I
can't think of a good alternative).

Bottom line: To each his'n!
