Make sure you test your backups, otherwise you won't know if they are OK.
There's not much sense in making daily/weekly/monthly backups that don't
work ;-)

One point that hasn't been mentioned is that it would be wise to make a
backup to a different drive than the one containing the data file, either in
addition to or instead of a backup to the same hard drive.  By this I mean
physical hard drive.  Backing up to floppies, Zip disks, or CD can save your
bacon when (not if) your hard drive goes bonkers.  There are two kinds of
people who use  hard drives - those who have had one crash, and those who
will!  Magnetic media are fairly reliable, but disk oxide surfaces can go
bad, and bearings can wear out.  Better safe than sorry.

As an additional safety factor, I periodically make an extra backup and send
it offsite.  If your house burns down, at least you won't lose all the years
of work on your family tree.
