Subject: Checking names

Amen! You got my vote! When I find a certain surname it goes in to my nearly
15,000 person database of ancestors. Both linked and unlinked. Hoping to
maybe link them to someone at a later time. Who is going to remember all the
islands of loose individuals floating around in a large file. I know I won't
remember. As a person is entered they need to be checked against the
individuals already entered. Saves some of us considerable time. The other
choice of going to search or the name list to check an individual. Is
antiquated, cumbersome and a pain in the you know where.

David,

No! I, and several others, have asked for an "on the fly" name
check during data entry. FTW has this but Brothers Keeper had it
earlier and better. As soon as you enter the name BK offers a
list of same-names from which you may choose or continue to enter
a new person. I know, why not just look the person up in the Name
List before entering them? Or, enter them then do a "Find
Duplicates". Both alternatives are overly complex and wasteful of
time. The whole purpose of computer-based genealogy is to
simplify, streamline and make more efficient the collection,
storage, and retrieval of data. The two proposed alternatives
would be unnecessary if Legacy simply did a name check as the user
typed. For those who want to take their chances or do it some
other way, this would, of course, be a toggled feature, much like
the location or surname checking is now.

All the best,

John
