Kristian:

I don't think you understand the nature of the source in question. The
"Illinois Statewide Marriage Index 1763-1900" is an index. You mentioned the
"tips from the experts" on the Legacy website. I assume you were referring to
the "Vital Records" example? This example was not about an index. I think the
example most like this source is the "Directory" example.

Suppose this index were published in book form. I would think the book would
be the master source, and the single line in the book which referred to the
marriage in question (X married Y on mm/dd/yyyy in ABC county - see volume NNN
for actual marriage record) would be the detail. The library where you
obtained the book would be the repository. At least that is how I would source
it.

As far as sourcing vital records, I can see doing it either way. But this is
more of a function of how Legacy works (or doesn't work). In a previous email,
Geoffrey Rasmussen explained the reason he chose to create a master source for
each vital record was because he could "Show List" on said master source and
get useful information. But suppose you could "Show List" on a master
source/source detail combination? Example ... show me a list of all
individuals using master source "Vital Records of Pennsylvania" with detail
"Birth Certificate of David Brown". Seems to me that if Legacy had this
feature it would accomplish the same thing?

Just my 2 cents.

And like I said, it's mostly personal preference. It's not like you're not
recording the detail. It's just a question of where you're putting it. You
lean more towards the master source, others lean more towards the source
detail. Nether approach is wrong.

P.S. I wouldn't have said anything if you hadn't called Holly's reply "bad
advice".
