Nancy,

I have researched this question myself and the one method that came up time
and again is a system strictly based on numbers. Here's a link to a short
introductory article that discusses advantages/disadvantages of 2 different
systems: http://www.robl.w1.com/aspp-image.htm It doesn't directly deal with
genealogy but you'll get a general idea...

In my system, I number as follows:
- Documents (i.e. scans of documents):
     d0000001.tif (jpg, etc.)
     d0000002.tif
     d0000003.tif
If a document has more than one page, I add an a, b, c... behind the number
(e.g. d0000002a.tif)

- Photographs:
     p0000001.tif
     p0000002.tif
If I scanned, for example, details of that photograph, I add a, b, c behind
the number.

Since quite a few programs still use the "8 character file name" convention,
it is useful to limit the numbers preceding the "." in the file name to 8
characters. Although I have to admit that my a's, b's, c's, do break that
rule and make it a total of 9 characters :-)

In order to quickly organize/find my images despite their numerical file
names, I am using an image management software (ThumbsPlus,
www.cerious.com). It allows me to enter all kinds of information for each
scan, such as the names of the people depicted, locations, dates, etc. It is
highly customizable, thus allowing me to adjust the fields to my needs and
preferences. ThumbsPlus also has a very good search & sort function, so if
you searched for - in your case - Downing, it would quickly find any scans
where this name was entered as information.

There are other software programs out there that accomplish the same thing,
ThumbsPlus is just what I finally decided on after testing various programs.

Hope this helps a little,

Irene

Subject: [LegacyUG] "naming" scans and photos

I have many scanned documents and digital photographs (people, places,
headstones, etc.) that I want to include with Legacy. Is there some
standard method of assigning names to such documents and photos? In
addition to Legacy, I want to be able to link them to Bygones, and also
maintain some type of index or cross-reference. Since they don't all refer
to specific people, I don't think I want to use last names(such as
Downing0001, etc.) Any ideas would be appreciated!! Thank you.

Nancy
