I do this on Ancestry.com all the time.  The surname list is far from
"computer generated", it still takes a person to transcribe.  So yes, the
spelling they may come up with, that lands in the index database, maybe off.
But it's still a far leep from scanning through the images by hand one at a
time.  I've done the scan thing with some of the non-indexed census images
on ancestry, its painful but can be fruitful (thank god for broadband too).

As for the source citation bit, if you made the master sources the upper
most level of a public record, like say a census, then every time you cited
that source, you'd need to fill in all of the extra details.  And I know I
like to tag sources on as many individuals and events as they possibly apply
to.
