Kraig and Jim: Additional thoughts.... You'll also have to install MS Access and the current MS MDAC which are Legacy prerequisites which will install the windows DLLs that Legacy calls.
WINE info at www.winhq.org does have a little bit about Access and it's many flavors (95,97,2000,2002) but most indicate that they could not get Access to run, though most complaints were about the Access user interface which Legacy doesn't use. Since Legacy only makes API calls to Access, there is good chance it could work. Also, at http://www.winehq.com/?page=myths "Debunking Wine Myths" there is some good discussion about speed and efficiency when running applications via WINE. It generally suggests that it should be just as fast or faster (depending) especially since it not a "chip emulator" but a "windows API emulator" already running on Intel. Please note that I haven't tried this yet. It's on my "to do" list, so have been reading about it with interest. Dick Eastman reviewed a new Linux build at: http://www.rootsforum.com/archives/news0317.htm which is called Knoppix which is a complete Linux system on a bootable CD so you don't have to install it to run it. It includes WINE so this could be an interesting way to test. He mentions Gramps but also laments that there seems to be very little genealogy software for Linux. A Linux version of Legacy or a 'how to install and run Legacy in Linux with WINE" would be interest to me. But there is bound to be issues with such things as web publishing (although the HTML should be fine on Linux), publishing to rtf format (a MS document format), publishing to PDF, etc. All these rely on readers, viewers and/or applications in Linux that can handle to data format. And, of course, the addon programs for additional reports and charts ... probably don't have a Linux version ... (but might run under WINE, but would need testing) ... so there are many potential issues. hope this helps those that are interested, ..../Jeremy in Bethesda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kraig Jones" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, May 30, 2003 9:27 AM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Linux Software anyone? > Just for fun, I've tried running Legacy in Wine: > Red Hat 8.0 > Wine build 20030508 > Legacy V4, 17 May 2003 > > Legacy installs, but when I run it I get "Run-time > error 404; Automation error".
