From: "Carolyn Simonton" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have received several emails from someone in Canada concerning burials, census, etc.
According to Geoff's source examples, he shows the date the email was received. I guess this is a dumb question, but here goes...do I cite the same source (email from so and so) or do I need to add a new email source for so and so with a different 'received' date.
Hi Carolyn,
Here's how I cite emails as sources in Legacy. First I create a new Master Source and call it: "Electronic Correspondence from L. Smith" - that's the Source Name I use (I do select Source Names to show in Reports). For Author, I spell out the writer's name in full, and in the Title section I enter, "Correspondence received via email or online message boards." For publication facts, I enter just the year or range of years, if it's just emails. If the "electronic correspondence" is a thread of messages on a message board, I will put the website as Publisher, and the year. I only add bits of the text of a source if something very notable stands out, but I will add as many Comments as needed. For Repository, since I have filed all printed copies of such emails, I use "Research collection of D. Ingino" and my address.
Then when when I actually am citing it as a source, however many times in the future I will be citing that source -- I select that Master Source, and when I get to the details section I would enter the specific date the particular correspondence was received. But I must say that I tend to group emails together, not citing specifc dates of each one but preferring a range of dates. So if I don't feel it's necessary to cite a very specific date, I don't really enter anything in the Details section except the surety level and "Recorded date." I print out copies of each email and keep them filed with my other hard-copy sources. I don't bother to enter the full actual text of any source in my program because I consider a citation just a pointer to tell me where to find the source and I make sure that I preserve the actual sources as hard copy. I'm working on too many lines to be entering actual text into each source, and I really don't feel it's necessary. I'm not sure if the way I use this takes advantage of the Clipboard or not (is Clipboard the same as creating a Master Source?), but I hope this was helpful.
