I'm not sure why you can't open them, but I can open pages saved as html or mht, even when offline, and even after renaming them (using ME) - so your problem is not in the file format itself.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] archiving webpages for documentation

Listers,

I have over several year frequently download webpages as HTML docs for
documentation, as though I was making a copy from the library, for example.
Since most of the time, I do not want all of the nested links, rather just
the page I am looking at, I save as "Web page, HTML only" which kept me from
getting all the nested pages, add gifs, etc, additional folder. I thought
that by doing this I was preventing the dreaded problem of losing the
information should the web author change their server, move their link, etc.
Occassional I would also save as a .MHT archive as that would also give me
pictures of just the first page if pictures were something on the sight that
were of interest to me. It had not so far presented me with any problems.

I recently upgrade to XP, also to office 2000 if this makes any difference.
But using a suggestion of the board I decided it a good idea to use document
numbers on those articles I had used in my Bibliography. Uh oh. When I
change the name of either of the above, the sight, although not a shortcut,
will not come up.

When this happened I took a looking at the sourcecode, to find see that the
web url is embedded into the source. That especially the MHT is a useless
archive as it has NO TEXT, just a lead back to the url address.

Am I just up the creek here or can some one offer me some direction. I now
feel like I am presented with the awesome job of going through my entire
archive of downloaded HTML's research to see if the links are still. That
the whole purpose of saving them was defeated. Something must be amiss in
my line why even offer the save as HTML only mechanism I used if changing
the link, would lose the data, a shortcut would serve the same purpose.

I also used to be able to open these "Web Page ONLY HTML's in Win 98 and
Highlight those lines that were of particular interest to me within the HTML
code; now the pages do not open in Windows 2000.

I feel like I fell in an HTML code. I realize this might seem somewhat off
Legacy Topic, but this information if very important to my Genealogy
documentation and therefore to my Legacy documentation. Perhaps someone
else could direct me to a website with some assistance in this matter.
Thanks in advance for any help and the continued suggestions to numerous to
be mentioned which are of great help.
