Regarding gedcoms:

James, that is exactly what I had to do. It would import back into paf.
Then I exported again and was then able to import into Legacy. Could I have
imported straight from paf? His file was a paf 5.5. I don't recall seeing
that as an option. The import file lists up to paf 4.

Try importing it back into PAF
Maybe it is a bad file
Or maybe he took some unexpected choices in PAF

PAF can be downloaded free from Familysearch.org

Regarding hp printers:
I too used hp until recently. My most recent purchase was an all in one.
The printer was great but the software had serious problems. The software
would be "changed" and the printer needed to be reinstalled FROM SCRATCH any
time another software program or program update was downloaded/installed;
including Microsoft or Norton updates that occur frequently. I found that
my hp camera software is affected as well.

The quality of print in the hp is great. Whatever they changed in their
software and drivers and the frustration with tech support who would not or
could not recognize this problem has made hp not worth it. One text jockey
went so far as to tell me my system needed to be reloaded that the problem
was not theirs. I can assure you my system was not the problem and even
after reloading it, the hp problem was still there.

Regarding Legacy Speed:
Yes, Legacy is visibly slower than FTM and I have written to Legacy about it
who implied it was my machine. I have chosen to live with the slower speed
to get the other benefits.
