I have a somewhat different view. I usually (with some exceptions)
don't put countrys into event places, so I don't worry about how
to abbreviate them. Also I don't use abbreviations, because they
can be unclear, as the above exchange indicates.

For example: Brx Bor, NY, NY
is better wrtitten as: Bronx Borough, New York, New York

I usually don't use countrys because they are not in the source.
Which raises the somewhat philosophical issue of what does
one record in a genealogy database?   Do you record your
conclusions, or the data you collect as you find it?  I lean
toward recording the data so I or someone else can revisit
the conclusions at a later time.   Conclusions can be put
in Notes or other narrative items IMO.
