While I certainly agree that GEDCOM is very imperfect, I would not be
a Legacy user today without it!  I collected about 4000 people in my
original
FTM files.  I used GEDCOM to move to Generations and stayed there until
I had 10,000 people in my file.  At that point I transfered to Legacy.  I do
NOT
think I would have moved 10K people to Legacy by hand.

I'm of the opinion that GEDCOM is still a great idea.  Particularly when
there
are programs out there (I've even written one or two) that make the transfer
process smoother or better.  Perhaps the standard needs updating, but seems
to me that companies need to do a better job of enhancing transfers into and
out of their programs.  Of course there is a motivation to transfer into
their
software, while the motivation to improve outward transfers is minimal at
best.
