That's because I use multiple Gen programs and use GEDCOM
to move data between them.

As long as Legacy allows for the option exporting a "standard" GEDCOM, why
would you have a problem with it?

I have an aditional comment:

If a Middle name field (or two) is added in Legacy it has to be an option. It's free for anyone to use it (them) with eventually GedCom problems, or not.

Exchange of informations is important, but as you also mention, the GedCom standard is narrowing in the possibilties to some of the major programs and there is no development in the GedCom-stanard.

May be the problem is that the LSD Church who runs the GedCom standard to transport informations within their system don't see the problem, also they have interests in programs?

To those who believe this is a AKA issue. I use AKA to build up a name, and will continue to to that, but the AKA still contains two fieds (beside suffix/prefix), I miss at least one field.

This isn't an AKA isue, it's the fact that a lot of Europeans identify their ancestors by two names and a location/farmname.

From time to time Americans search their ancestors in Scandinavia. Those who only have John Olsson doesn't get far if that is the only information they have. They nead an area, and a farm name gives greater chanses to get a hit. That's the way I do my research, put small bits together, names and property, small bits of informations.

If ya get my drift. >-)

Kristian correctly points out that GEDCOM allows the use of
user defined tags. True enough. It's a reasonable solution. Almost
got me to change my position. But the problem is that most programs
don't do a good job in handling user defined tags.

Also, the issue was raised about the GEDCOM standard and thus
the LDS church defining the boundaries or scope of Gen programs.
They certainly do not do that, IMO because most programs do things
that the GED standard does not encompass. I agree it could use some
updating (GEDCOM 6?) and is too American-centric. There is
also a lot of talk, even from the LDS, about replacing GEDCOM with
an XML based standard. Makes sense technologically, but I don't
see it happening. I mean nothing seems to be going on with the XML
"replacement" for GEDCOM except a lot of talk.

The bottom line is that Legacy's "owners" and those of the other Gen
programs are completely free to add (or remove!) whatever features
they want to (from) their programs. Maybe Legacy 6 will add a fifth or
even a sixth field to the four fields already used for names. Maybe
it will or won't be compatible with GEDCOM or some new XML
based "standard". That decision is completely up to Dave and the
other good folks at Millennia.

It's just that this one customer would not like to see something that is
incompatible with GEDCOM or even not well handled by programs
using GEDCOM for data transfer, such as using user defined tags.
That's because I use multiple Gen programs and use GEDCOM
