Marie,
Now what happens when I have a source that proves someone's name and gives another alt birth event? Is it listed beside 'name' or as an 'alt birth' event?
Well, the Assigned Sources list is actually a list of LINKS to sources, not just a list of Sources, so you can have the same source repeated several times and linked to different events or fields for the same individual. In your example, the same source would show up twice. I've found it useful to show the specific detail in the Detail Text tab (or maybe the Detail Information tab for simple things like a date). In your example, you may have the same master source, say a marriage certificate, but the Detail Text against the 'alt birth' event might be "Aged 27 when married on 27 Aug 1886". The Detail Text against the name field might be "Signed her name Emilie Minna Polack". (real example of a relative whose name is spelled differently in every reference to it!!) This then gives a high level of surety to the source. I used not to put in this level of detail, because at first it seems obvious. However, if you don't and later find some conflicting evidence, it becomes hard to judge which one to believe.
I'm new to family history, but am learning the hard way (i.e.. by much trial and error!) that you can save yourself a lot of rework by taking the time to record sources carefully. I didn't find it immediately obvious what's worth recording and what's not. Fortunately, once you get the hang of it, Legacy's facilities for doing this efficiently are excellent.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Rob
