Perhaps you did not look at the list on the left hand side, Denise? While the chart features their "top 10", you will find over on the left, Genbox ranked at #11; Heredis at #12 and Famtree at #13. Clicking on each of those links brings up a full review and rating scale report for each product.
Being a user of Legacy as my main program, I have no argument with them over their ranking of Legacy as #1 :-) (I do have seven of their listed "13" currently installed). Family Tree Maker ranked as #2? Well, even with the revamped latest version, it still lags well behind most of the others and should be around about #8 (personal opinion). Ancestral Quest (#3) and PAF (#4) ahead of The Master Genealogist (#8) and RootsMagic (#5) is another strange choice. AQ and PAF are excellent programs but don't have all the features of the other two. Doro Tree (#7) may be an excellent program for those of the Jewish faith, but would it be a program for the serious genealogist? How many genealogists know of its existence and would even look at it as a "choice"? Heredis you nominated as ranking above many of the others. It is an excellent program. I was involved in beta-testing this program a couple of years back. Its one major failing is the complete hash it makes of importing a GEDCOM file from other programs. This is simply because the French programmers decided that the inclusion of a zip/post code area was a NECESSITY. No amount of suggestions or prompting from non-French beta-testers at the time could convince them of the silliness of such a feature (how many of our forefathers had zip codes?). Consequently, when a GEDCOM is imported, data gets "fed" into this zip code area that should not be there. Perhaps they have come to their senses on that feature and eliminated it - I hope so as it is an excellent program otherwise. This particular site rates far more than genealogy programs, which can be discovered by clicking on the links at the top of the page. They do not mention whether the "testers" were accredited genealogists. They do mention "programmers" being involved. Perhaps that explains why the ratings are a bit strange. Still, the programs are all good quality programs. Each can fulfil one or many needs for an individual researcher and you made a good point on that with "on how we work". A list such as this is helpful guide, but not to be taken as "gospel" by any stretch of the imagination. Unfortunately the selection of genealogy applications is limited to 10 and those certainly not the 'top 10' applications. Two I can think of that are better than others on the list, yet not included, are Heredis (Premium and Standard versions) and Genbox. A recent issue of 'Ancestry Magazine' also identified the 'top genealogy applications', yet limited just which applications they chose to include. Please remember that each of us works differently and therefore have different needs. The 'best genealogy application' will depend upon how we work. That is one reason there are so many different applications. Best, Denise L.
