Richmond city is not in any county. There are 37 city governments and 100 county governments all of which are separate from each other (I think these counts are correct). BUT there are also cities which are in counties. I think there are one or two other states who do the same thing.

If you enter a location of , Richmond, Virginia, USA you will see the towns and cities in Richmond County.

Anytime that the geo database shows (city), it means that the government for that city is totally separate from ANY county.

So I'm still a 'little' confused. What county is your "Richmond city" in?

The geo location database when searching City=Richmond and State=Virginia
does exhibit the same format I'm talking about:
Richmond, Richmond (city), Virginia, USA.

I still don't understand why this would happen just because there's a city
with the same name as a county and that city is not in that county (whew),
but maybe that's what it's really trying to say.

You are right about Virginia. We have a Richmond city and a Richmond
County
which are not located anywhere near each other. There is a Fairfax City
and
a Fairfax County which are located next to each other, and many others.
So
check your location carefully!
