Mike,

Until recently I've only entered actual dates, even though the month or day
may have been omitted when not known. A few weeks ago I also experimented
with a record for which I had much known information (my own). I thought
I remembered that Legacy was supposed to be able to handle date ranges,
but I wasn't sure how they were supposed to be entered. I couldn't really
find anything to explain it, so I just tried entering "From 1977 to 1982"
just like you're doing. I was happily surprised that Legacy not only did
not complain about my entry, but also had the good sense to change "From"
to "from" when it was in the middle of a sentence. Even adding a month
name didn't cause a problem.

But I haven't gotten brave enough to try "small sentences" like you've
done. It's good to hear that any such input is acceptable.

I've never used the ability to sort events because in many cases I've got
"events" that really have no date associated with them and I want to keep
all event entries in chronological order, which I have to do manually.

"Is it unreasonable to hope that Legacy would one day be able to sort this
list by date?" Probably ;-) since there are so many other requests that
that are undoubtedly piled up on the desks of the developers.

Bob

Over the last couple of days I've been experimenting with the events for
occupation and residence for a family member I have a lot of data for. It
seems to work OK, and I rather like the little chart you get on the left on
the Individual Report. However, not all the dates sort properly. This is
not
too surprising because some of them are entered in non-standard ways.
However, it would be darn nice if Legacy could figure out some of these and
sort them correctly -- they're not impossible, just complicated.

Here are the dates from the events I entered, in the order they sort into:

from summer 1960 to December 1961
in the late nineteen-fifties
in the early nineteen-fifties
from her birth in 1919 until she went to university
from 1962 to 1965
from 1962 to early 1965
from 1965 to 1979
from 1965 to her death in 1981

I suspect the first four are sorted randomly and the last for are sorted on
at
least the first year found, which is quite reasonable. Is it unreasonable
to
hope that Legacy would one day be able to sort this list by date? It would
be
OK if I had to say "1950s" or "1950's" instead of "nineteen-fifties", if
that
would help. Even just picking out the first year in the text would be a
pretty good way to go.
