Lewis, Please consider file transfer issues if you plan to share family data. Relationships to Father and Mother are sometimes lost or changed, so you cannot depend on sources for those relationships being kept in file transfers. Legacy 5 build of Dec 18, 2003 was changed to keep child-parent sources in a default Legacy GEDCOM.
There are variations in the way that desktop genealogy programs allow a child to have a single parent, two bio or natural parents (blank by default in Legacy) or multiple parents. Sometimes an imported file will have multiple parents but not tell which individual(s) are the bio parents of a specific child. Some researchers attempt to connect a child to grandparents or other relatives who raised them. Kevin Phillips and the users of Pocket Genealogist have a major interest in this topic because there is an option for GEDCOM transfer back to the desktop software. Some researchers use name sources for child-parent relationships but name variations are another complication in file transfers. My preference is to keep sources simple and use the birth date/location for the main source for each individual -- how I know that person existed as well as their birth date and location. A GEDCOM transfer to PAF and back to Legacy 5 would be a good test for any important source data entry methods. Also test transfers to any programs or utilities used for web pages and wall charts. -- Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lewis" > For some time now I have wondered how to enter a source to document the > link between a child and his parents.
