One minute of latitude is 1 nautical mile. Longitude depends upon your latitude. At the equator, it is the same. As you move away from the equator, one minute of longitude equals 1 nautical mile times the cos of the latitude angle.

I think the true measurement of a nautical mile is 1 minute of longititude at the equator.
