Thanks everyone for the suggestions. It looks like the answer is to either upgrade to XP Pro or get more RAM (if I can afford it) or to frequently clean up / defrag the disc and/or re-install Windows Me (if I can't afford to upgrade).
I may look into upgrading my system, but I'll try doing a clean up & defrag in the meantime (I did a reinstall a few months ago) and see how that works.
