I thought I remembered that Y problem from another time and that 
there was a fix. I had intended to look in the Archives.  You just 
saved me the time and trouble.  I have never tried to open a 
GEDCOM in a word processing program, let alone edit one, but 
I'm game. Thanks for the solution, Chap. I think I can make this

FTM does not handle the GEDCOM "1 DEAT Y" tag correctly on  import.
This has been discussed a number of times on this list.

Here  is your solution for the Y appearing in FTM.

Create your GEDCOM from  Legacy.

Then go into any Text processor and edit your GEDCOM file and  globally 
replace
"1 DEAT Y"
With  a
Blank

Save the GEDCOM file  & then import it into FTM.
