Hi Alastair,

Thanks for jumping in here. I enjoy reading your posts, always.

The issue of Notes transfer is confusing. I never understood what
the fuss was all about until just now when you sent me the Legacy
help file writeup. I still don't fully get it, but I'm working on it.

Some people I have heard from offlist have had trouble with notes
transferring, some have not. Elizabeth Rodier suggests the way
to get them to transfer properly is to check the appropriate box
under Customize in the GEDCOM window. On the other hand,
John (jr) Bayle had little trouble with Notes transfer when he did
his tests with FTM 10.

For the most part I am beginning to suspect it is dependent upon
to which version of FTM one is making the transfer. From what
I have heard, 2005 is different from the earlier versions of, say, 10
or 11. FTM v11 is around here somewhere that I have never loaded
(with cause), but might do so to accommodate my dearly beloved
relative who clings to FTM. I will just have to try it, having prepared
myself with the wisdom offered by all the knowledgeable LegacyUG
list members who have taken of their precious time to help me
accomplish this. Many thanks to all. -- Alice

Hi, Alice,

Note lines in Legacy help file.

Note fields are continuous until a carriage return is entered. If you
increase or decrease the width of the note window, all the text is
reformatted within the new width. Other programs, such as Personal
Ancestral File, have fixed lengths for each line in the note field and each
of these lines is exported to a separate line in the GEDCOM file. As
Legacy is exporting a GEDCOM file it breaks the long continuous lines
into smaller pieces. (My comment - I think that is 256 chars). You
can control how long these segments are by entering a number to
indicate their length.

What I couldn't achieve was for FTM to import anything after the first
lump - they were all lost.

But it may have been my amateurishness at fault

Warm regards ;-)

Alastair
