Sharon,
No, you can not delete the event because it is being used.  It does not
matter how you get to the master event definition list.

Have you tried to go to the event list (open any person with the event you 
are talking about and click the down arrow on the right to get to the master

event list)?  There is an option to delete here, which I would assume would 
delete every event with that event name.
