When I use a source like Ancestry.com, I generally record the source as (something like), '1880 US Federal Census Transcription as Provided by Ancestry.com'.
I write it this way because I've found that there are a lot of tiny errors on Ancestry.com that have a ripple effect, eg one of my ancestors was 5 years old on the census, but a check mark by her age was recorded as a '1' in Ancestry's transcription and so they listed her YoB as being 46 years before she was actually born. At the time, I couldn't see the census image so had no way of reviewing the source material. If I have the chance of looking at the actual census films, such as those provided at a Family History centre or a local Hamilton library, I would record something similar: '1881 Canadian Census Film as Provided by the FHC (or HPL)'. The information from those sources is sometimes only as good as the reader on which you're viewing them. Unless I can actually hold and read the documention (like a family Bible), I always double up my source references and assume any records - regardless of source - are secondhand and thus subject to (mis)translation. /\\ike the Genealogical Butt Coverer ----- Original Message ----- From: "j b" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, March 07, 2005 12:46 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] Source Citing (3rd try) > Hello, > > I have been looking for the "correct" way to cite Census data.
