I have found the best way is to use the Alternate name screen. This keeps events clean from "clutter". I like events to ONLY contain true events. If you use the Alternate name screen (button looks like 3 dudes in white shirts w/ ties), I recommend you record both first and last name. For example, I might list me as "Jonathan Bohlmann" as the main name. But some places I am listed as "John bowman" so I record an Alternate name as "John Bowman". I have also seen "John Bohlmann" so again I record an alternate name as "John Bohlmann". The reason for listing both first and last name is that some of the reports will do an index. I had several AKAs listed with the first name only (after all I knew the last name as I was on that individual) and this messed up the index by putting " , first" in my index instead of "last, first".

I have no idea what the standard practice is, and it doesn't much matter to me. I like doing the way you have suggested, and have been doing it that way for a long time. For example one of my GG Grandfathers was a fellow named Francis Lee. At least that's what he called himself some of the time when he was in the USA. He was born in Canada and given the name Francois Dessiengue. So he is in my database as Francis Lee, with an aka as Francois Dessiengue. His father was also named Francois Dessiengue, but I have found three other variants of his name. Each of these names, is in a different Legacy AKA. To me, if a name is different by one letter, that "variant" gets a whole new AKA.
