William
Thanks very much for your suggestion. It seems to work fine - at
least for "Reports", whether conventional or web based.
I do see a couple of drawbacks, however:
- the first is that one has to reference the 'image' (whether html or
whatever with a *fully qualified* filespec in the Note text (meaning that if
the image file is moved, there's a potentially *big* editing job to be done.
- The other is that the 'image' still does not show "on screen", as do
traditional photos if, for example, one opens the "Picture Gallery" for the
chosen individual.
Incidentally, my comments / request apply equally to other document types
(such as 'wordprocessed text' files (such as MS-Word, or whatever your
favourite format is).
Apart from William's suggestion, I see no easy way to 'include' a
(pre-existing) text file in "Events" or "Sources". And it makes so little
sense to have to "copy-and-paste" plain-text from available computer-based
files into the plain-text-only "Notes" or "Details" of curent Legacy
"Events" and "Sources". Why can't we just "attach" (or "Add" in Legacy
parlance) these types of files using the (or something like the) "Add
Pictures, Sound and Video" button in "Event" and "Source" editing windows
However, some progress. Thanks

By "thumbnail" I mean exactly what "that nice man" Mr Gates (and
Microsoft!) mean in their implementation of MS_Explorer
- or indeed what Legacy actually does with "Pictures" (whether .jpg or .gif
or .bmp or the whole raft of Legacy-supported *picture* file formats)
There is *no* contradiction in seeking to "thumbnail" an html document - it
just means it may be displayed (much) smaller than the 'full size' version,
usually as a "placemarker" to visually identify what the referenced file
actually contains.
All I'm asking (especially now I have learned William's advice) is that
Legacy *interprets* htm and html objects (and, I would have to add, .doc and
.txt object files) *inline*, just as it does with "picture" format files.

You could always add <img src="your_document_name.jpg"> in the note section
of an event. Put it in [[]] brackets so it doesn't show in reports and
remove them when building the page. Legacy will automatically convert the <
> to html < > and the image will be right below the text. I do this when I
want aligned tables to show -- see the Receipt event at

Sorry -- forgot that the email also does the conversion to < and >. Use
alt+0171 and alt+o187 for your image code.

I don't understand your reference to a "thumbnailed" html document. How =
can an html document be "thumbnailed"?

Friends
I am happy with ... <snip> ...
What do folk do about 'including' (I'm deliberately avoiding the word
"attach") material which is 'native' in "html" format? Obviously, one
*could* first cut-and-paste a 'screen image' of an "html" document into
"plain text" and then paste that (plain text) into "Notes", or "Details" or
whatever. Indeed, I *have* done that!
... <snip> ...
I know that one can, and I do, "include" 'html' files as a "pseudo" Sound or
Video image, but the trouble with that is that "thumbnail image" gets
displayed only as a 'Sound' or 'Video' icon, rather than as a thumbnail of
the actual document. That said, actually "opening" the thumbnail (which is,
sadly,
... <snip> ...
All it would take, I *think*, is for the "picture" handling part of Legacy
(most especially the "Picture Centre", but other bits as well!) to recognise
'html' (and, of course, 'htm') as a *standard* file type *at all stages* and
to open it (as thumbnail or 'windowed' document) accordingly.
