Mary,
You can do this, but it's not obvious! You need to attach .pdf files
as either a Sound or Video attachment. (Just click Sound or Video and
then proceed like you would  attach a Picture. You will have to change
the default file type to All Files to see the file you're interested
in in the File dialogue.).The file will be attached and you can open
it by clicking the "thumbnail" which unfortunately doesn't display an
image of your document, but rather "Sound" or "Video".

Improvements in this area have been requested by many people, so
hopefully we will see something soon (V6?).
