I am also using TNG and can second what Glen says about the
developer being helpful. I knew absolutely nothing about building
a website. I knew nothing at all about HTML. It was hard going
for me and I certainly didn't get my site up in 2 hours, because
every step was new territory for me. No question was ever too
trivial for Darrin and it seemed he responded any time he was
awake.

There is a new version coming out in the very near future. Those
who aren't savvy with this sort of thing might like to wait for
it. Otherwise, I second everything Glen has said.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Website creation - an easier and DYNAMIC
approach

There has been a lot of discussion as of late on the subject of
creating
individual web pages and uploading them.

Before I go any further: I do not work for the following
company. I am
just very impressed with it's programs abilities.

For those interested, check out TNG.

http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php (for information)

http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/demo.php (for a demo of the public
and
administration features)

http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/usersites.php (to see other sites
using TNG)

This does require a website that has PHP and MySQL database
support. If you
have both of these, you can simply purchase the PHP scripting
that Darrin
has written, upload to your website, and follow the instructions
supplied.
Once you have your site configured, you simply upload your images
and a .GED
file, import your gedcom file and away you go. Your website is
now dynamic.
You can view individuals, family groups, pedigree charts, etc...
No more
creating individual pages.

My website is using this software. I upload any images I acquire
and a
gedcom file once a week. I then run the import and my data is
updated. It
is quite configurable. You can select which events to allow for
viewing on
the individuals and family group pages.

Darrin (TNG's developer) is as responsive as the good folks at
Legacy with
requests for help, etc.

I had my site uploaded and configured in about 2 hours. Now it
takes me
about 2 minutes of my time and 20 to 30 minutes of my computers
processing
time to update my website. I no longer have to thousands and
thousands of
pages and upload them. This process has cut down my manual
webpage editing
time to zero. It is awesome.

Another feature of this software: It allows you to assign user
accounts
that have different rights. You can lock it down so a user can't
see
information on living or on LDS ordinances. You can allow or
disallow
downloading of a gedcom file. You can have multiple trees and
allow certain
individuals access only to a particular tree. You can define
individual
branches in your main tree and limit a persons views to only that
branch and
much much more. You can also allow your family to edit or add
information
directly to your website (online) or require them to email you
any changes
to place in your database.

The only feature that isn't available at this time, but is being
worked on
for a future release: images in events don't display. There are
many
requests for this feature pending and Darrin has stated in the
list that he
is working on it for a future release.

I hope this will help someone solve their issues or just save
someone time.

Glen
