After rebuilding my PC (nothing to do with genealogy but quite a lot to do with my own stupidity - don't ask .... ) I've downloaded OpenOffice and it works just fine - I didn't have to rename to .mdb though, just used the ADO data source and selected one of my Legacy databases directly. Now all I have
to do is to learn how to use OpenOffice to do what I want. Thanks for the tip!

I just downloaded the latest OpenOffice package from openoffice.org and it reads the database just fine. You have to change the extension on your data to .mdb instead of .fdb

Several people have mentioned using Access directly on the Legacy tables
recently. I only have Access 97, which can't do this directly. Has
anyone got a workaround?


There seems to be no workaround, except using Access 2000 or above.
