For a surname the accepted practice is [--?--]. For a given name I leave 
blank but also add Mr. or  Ms. - - this to denote sex. You can also put 
"son" or "daughter" as a given name if the parents are known but make 
sure they are lower case - - I have at least two families who had male 
children with the given name "Son" (birth certs reflect - probably a 
shortened version of "Sonny"). No-one named "Daughter" yet but would not 
be surprised to see one. Also, while we are on the subject, titles 
should always spelled out.....Col. for Colonel, Judg. for Judge, Dr. for 
Doctor, Rev. for reverend, etc. A problem can arise as "Judge", for 
example, is not an uncommon given name in the Deep South and I have a 
"Doctor" or two as well. A comma after the title would normally take 
care of this but they are not always used.

I realize that this question has probably been asked before, but when 
the
first or last name of a person is unknown, is it better to write 
unknown
in the empty field in legacy, or should it just be left empty.
