Hi,

If, in the light of what I have already said, you wish to look at how we do our addresses can I suggest that you look at my website http://myweb/tiscali.co.uk/fergys/ where I have used full addresses in "notable events", excepting that unless the person came from Wales, Scotland or Ireland I have not specified where the county is - ie. England by default! I will correct this on my next update at around the end of this month. With the odd exception all addresses are pre 1974.

Many thanks for your kind comments.

Ron Ferguson

Thanks! So good to know that experienced others have difficulty too <G>
My interest really lies in the time periods prior to the late 1700s. Seems we all left "home" early on.
Do appreciate the good information,
K

Hi,

Broadly speaking the principle remains the same throughout time and the detail constant until 1974, since when we have had more changes than a stripper. To go into full detail would just confuse matters and indeed confuses a lot of the people in the UK. I will, however, give three examples of the sort of things to watch out for when comparing old addresses with modern ones.

Changes like these with the creation and abolition of counties, parishes, districts etc happened throughout England, Wales and Scotland so care needs to exercised when comparing old and modern details. As I said this confuses us as well but the one thing that has not changed is that the old town names still exist in the address but there are likely to have been changes in the full addresses as illustrated.

I must confess that this causes some quite interesting mental debates when trying to decide what is the best address to use when entering them into Legacy!
