I have no problem with what Gordon says, I just have a different preference. I see no purpose in hiding a major folder behind another folder, i. e., Legacy in Program Files. There are 22 folders there already without a single major program folder to confuse the issue. But the default is never a problem for me - I'll install all programs where I wish, just as Gordon does.
As for .usr files I've never given them a thought. I export a GED of every Legacy database to My Documents (my folder, not the computers). I also back up ALL data, not just Legacy, to stick or flash memory. So when the computer craps out it's only a matter of time to reinstall programs and data. The trick is not where the program is installed but whether you keep the program install disk and back up all data. Since we are agreed that flexibility is more important than the installation default, this thread may have run the course unless you cosse to reply, Gordon. I think the standard "default" placement should be.... well... standard. Placing a program folder in C:\ is not standard. Most program installs default to "Program Files". Hugh, I also agree that you should be able to stick it wherever you want. Most program installs including Legacy give you an option to change the program folder but most programs have a default program install folder of "Program Files". I just think Legacy should follow standard practices instead of defaulting to C:\Legacy. I also agree with you that you should be able to put the program and user data files in the same folder. Ugh! I'd never do that voluntarily but if you want the program and user files in the same folder you should have that option. I just don't think that it should be defaulted that way during the install. IMO the user files should be put in My Documents/Legacy. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
