Debbie,
Even without single parent families, Legacy has an issue with relationship charts when the descendants have a common ancestor with an extra marriage (or more) between. Sid reported that issue to the list in May 2004 and list participants have checked every build since then, as well as finding the problem existed in Legacy 4 final download in Nov 2003.

New data entry Legacy has a blank child-parent relationship by default. Children of married couples could have blank relationships OR two bio parent relationships. An unknown individual who was a bio partner of a single parent could be set to private but then the Legacy 5 group sheet shows Private (details suppressed for this person.) Narrative "had a relationship with Private" isn't much help either.

At least two genealogy programs add an unwanted Unknown spouse box for a single parent. The kinship calculations in those programs are different than Legacy. Child Status indicators and child-parent relationships are sometimes lost or changed so it is a good idea to repeat the information in GENERAL Legacy notes.

Almost any genealogy program can be used for a _simple_ family report with an index. For a complex family with single parents, unmarried couples, multiple marriages and cousin marriages, it is best to check reports and charts during data entry. Legacy reports often require editing in a word processor and pictures added one by one. -- Elizabeth

I could care less about this feature in File Transfers and until Legacy gets
it fixed in regard to families with only 1 biological parent, I guess I just
won't use the feature. Why would I want to put a bunch of "unknown" people
in my database just so I can use this feature? It's just not that important
to me, so I'll continue to use the Child Status indictor and use notes to
explain, and leave that bunch of "unknown" people out of my database.

It's just a shame that this problem has existed since before Legacy 5 could
be purchased and still nothing has been done about it.
