I also use Legacy directly transferred to Pocket Genealogist on a HP Jornada Pocket PC. This combination works great together.
My 13,000 person genealogy database uses about 35 mB of a 128 mB card. So I guess you could (depending on the amount of extra notes you have) get a fit about 40,000 individuals on this size card, and if necessary just buy a larger card! I have used this combination without problem for the past three years.
