[LegacyUG] How to show children and notes for first marriage

In my family tree I have 2 cases where my direct female ancestor married 
someone who had previously been married and where there were children of the 
first marriage. I enter the 1st marriage and attach those children, then I 
enter the 2nd marriage and make this the preferred spouse, I then enter 
their children. Unless I go and keep changing the preferred spouse I can't 
see the children of the first marriage and they don't print out in the 
descendent books.

Am I doing something wrong. Unless I specifically mention these people in 
events such as census, or in notes they don't seem to exist but I want them 
to appear as part of the family.
