I keep a formatted cdrw (not the same as a cd) in my writer. Sending backups
(zipped) as needed rotating backups from my second hd and cdrw. You could also
put your smith.fdb and related files on the cdrw. The formatted cdrw allows
both reading and writing of data and access with Legacy from the hd. But the
access time is very, very, very ,very slow. The simple cd will not allow
changes in once data is written. Thus the problem using a cd as a read/write
storage device. I can't speak for other storage media. But I know a compact
flash card will do the same as a cdrw. Allowing reading and writing. I have a
port that excepts the different cards. I do a save/as to the compact flash
card. I could remove it and take to another computer with the appropriate port
and legacy installed. And work from the data stored on the flash card.

Thanks Dennis, I can understand it now. Yes I was burning it to a CD right
from the legacy progam.
Hey Sherry, Legacy needs to make it easier for us older folks to be able to
copy and transfer (smile)

Use Windows Explorer to copy/paste the database from CD to hard drive.

Maybe I am not understanding what you mean by "I can't open the CD". Maybe
the
problem is that you are writing the database directly to the CD using
Legacy.
As I recall, this might work but is not supported or recommended. What you
should do is use "Backup Family File..." to create a .zip on your hard
drive.
Then use your CD software (outside of Legacy) to burn the .zip to the CD.
Put
this CD in the laptop and use Windows Explorer to copy the .zip to the
laptop's hard drive. Then start Legacy and use the "Restore Family File..."
option.
