Hi Ruth,
Obviously this is the UK site http://www.ancestry.co.uk and *not*
ancestry.com.
On the UK site BMD's which are compiled by FreeBMD are also available as is
the UK 1881 census (under an agreement with Family Search and the UK
National Archives). All UK censuses from 1871 to 1901 are available but
except for 1881 are chargeable.

The free stuff is free to everyone - but the good stuff like census and
birth, death is through subscription - unless I don't understand how to
get
it all free. Can someone explain?

Hi all,
May I draw your attention to some problems with the UK Free BMD website.
They admit that at present they are having some errors and I have found
that
certainly for Lancashire it is not displaying people on their data base.
May I suggest that one uses www.ancestry.co.uk which uses the same data
base
and is also free of charge. I have found that this site is giving results
which are not available through FreeBMD.
