Susan looked everywhere but could not open two 'Name Lists at the same
time so that they can be directly compared..
This is correct but there is a way to work around the problem. I am
providing my thoughts and solution to this problem more in
anticipation of Version 6 being released. It's very worthwhile having
two different versions of Legacy operational, in my view
Reasons for not being able to simultaneously compare two sets of data
in Legacy have been explained before. Essentially, installation of
the latest version of Legacy is performed by simply updating the old
version, if it had been installed. Those who upgraded from Legacy
Version 4 to Version 5 were given the option to install Version 5 in a
new folder (e.g. a folder that the installer named Legacy5). In this
way one has Legacy Version 4 and Legacy Version 5 on one's computer,
operating completely independent of each other. One can then open the
two versions of Legacy at the same time, adjust the viewing size of
each, and compare any individual window in both versions at the same
time. The great time saver is the ability to copy and paste any text
from one version to the other with windows of both versions
simultaneously on screen. Reviewing any type of information on
different individuals in the same database is a snap, as well as for
information in two different databases. I use this procedure whenever
I want to compare two different databases before merging.
Following the separate installation of Version 5 as described above,
one must copy your data folder from Version 4 to the Version5 folder.
I suspect that you can copy the Version 4 (dot) user (*.usr) files to
the Legacy5 folder and maintain all your Version 4 personal settings
in Version 5. This would probably be the case for going from Version
5 to Version 6.
Finally, I should remind users that it is necessary to prepare a
gedcom file of your database in the Version 5 program for copying to
the Version 4 program. If you care to reinstall your Version 4
program and still have the original disk, make sure it is installed in
a new folder (e.g. Lagacy4).
