I have used 2 methods for importing Legacy data
from my desktop PC to my new notebook PC.
Both methods are basicly the same, only the media differs.

On the desktop PC in Legacy I go to File>Backup Family File.
The Backup window comes up and I go to My Computer
and select where I wish the backup be stored.
In method 1 I store to my CD-RW drive using a new CD.
In method 2 I store to my new little USB Flash drive.
(I just got a 256mb flash drive for $15 after rebates
and plus sales tax. The prices are coming down.)
Then at the laptop PC go to File>Restore Family File
and follow the directions.
This seems to work fine and was done entirely
within Legacy.
You may want to Backup Media Files also. Check
Legacy Help for directions.

For some reason, I am unable to take my family files and import them into the new
computer. I am getting a "permissions" error message.

What do you mean by "import"? If you are transferring via CD, you should try
copying the file(s) using Windows Explorer from the CD to your hard drive and
then try to "import" them.
