You can setup your data to work from it. This is how I have my data set up. Most computers recognize my drive as drive E:\. I have a folder structure under this drive as follows: (I am excluding the drive letter as this may differ depending on your computer's configuration.) \Genealogy\ (This folder is for my data files: .fdb, .tc, .fg, etc...) \Genealogy\Images (This folder contains my family photos in paternal & maternal line folders) \Genealogy\Images\(paternal) (replace "(paternal)" with your paternal surname - father's last name) \Genealogy\Images\(maternal) (replace "(maternal)" with your maternal surname - mother's maiden name) (Note: if including spouses information in the same database, add 2 more \Genealogy\Images\ folders with his/her parents last names) \Genealogy\Images\Buildings \Genealogy\Images\Other All images on my memory drive are small (Thumbnail) images in .jpg medium format. I save images of individuals at 400 pixels high x ?? wide - letting the image software determine the width (or height). \Genealogy\Books (a place to store books I have scanned into PDF format.) \Genealogy\Documents \Genealogy\Documents\(paternal) (replace "(paternal)" with your paternal surname - father's last name) \Genealogy\Documents\(maternal) (replace "(maternal)" with your maternal surname - mother's maiden name) (Note: if including spouses information in the same database, add 2 more \Genealogy\Documents\ folders with his/her parents last names) \Genealogy\Documents\Other You can also setup a \Genealogy\Correspondence folder to save email messages in Text format or any other folder to suit your needs. Note: If you work with multiple family files, you might want to use the family name between \Genealogy and \Images eg: \Genealogy\Jones\ \Genealogy\Jones\Images \Genealogy\Jones\etc... \Genealogy\Smith\ \Genealogy\Smith\Images \Genealogy\Smith\etc... I prefer to use one family file for all my work. I also have other folders at the root of this drive: \GenDump \GenDump\GenApps \GenDump\GenApps\Legacy5Setup.exe (This is the installation file to install on others computers.) \Utils\ \Utils\AV (I carry an anti-virus program to scan the computers I plug my drive into. I also purchased a Memorex memory drive as it has a drive lock (like a diskette) to protect my data until I confirm the computer is clean. This is just me being overly cautious) This step is NOT necessary: (Your images might not show up on all computers, but they are still there and will work on your computer) Since not all computers recognize my drive as E:\, in Legacy, you can add locations for viewing your multimedia files. I don't change the path's that I have, I just add new ones with the drive letter. To see this list and add new items: In Legacy: 1.) Click on Options / Customize... 2.) Select the Locations tab 3.) Click on "View Current List of Multimedia Locations..." 4.) Duplicate all of your "\Genealogy\Images" locations with the appropriate drive letter for the current computer you are working on. Now, lets talk about my local computer: I have a \GenDump\ folder on my local computer with sub folders as follows: C:\GenDump\ C:\GenDump\Backup (This folder contains my Legacy backup file created when I exit Legacy) C:\GenDump\memoryDriveBackup (This folder contains sub folders as follows:) C:\GenDump\memoryDriveBackup\2005-06-25 C:\GenDump\memoryDriveBackup\2005-06-26 C:\GenDump\memoryDriveBackup\2005-06-27 C:\GenDump\memoryDriveBackup\2005-06-28 C:\GenDump\memoryDriveBackup\2005-06-29 C:\GenDump\memoryDriveBackup\2005-06-30 C:\GenDump\memoryDriveBackup\2005-07-01 (I keep 1 week's worth of backups of my drive. I select all files on my memory drive using Windows Explorer and select Copy. I go to the appropriate dated folder in C:\GenDump and select Paste. This makes a full backup of my drive as Legacy doesn't backup anything but it's data (and if you select to backup multimedia files - which I don't) This method has worked for me for over 3 years without any data loss. When I add an 8th day, I delete the first one in the list. You don't have to keep as many days as I do, but keep at least 2 or 3 days worth of backups. You never know when you have to go back an retrieve an image that disappeared on you.) I also have folders as follows: C:\GenDump\Images\ C:\GenDump\Images\(paternal) C:\GenDump\Images\(maternal) These folders contain the 300 dpi .TIF images that correspond with the .jpg images on my memory drive. I then back these images up on DVD+R disks. My cousin had over 100,000 names on his memory drive and hadn't made a backup when his drive failed to work. It was replaced free of charge, but he lost well over 500 hours of work from the last backup he made. The backup method I use isn't an automatic method, but if you do something more than 7 times it becomes a habit. And backing up data is a good habit to get into. Hope this helps. Glen I would be interested to see how others use their memory drive. My method works for me, but might not work for others. Hi Glen, I have just now purchased a 512 mb memory stick to use for my research. Could you please advise how to install Legacy into it? I am using Legacy 5 deluxe latest version.
