How interesting....I have a number of distant cousins that went to Australia from Gloucestershire in the very early 1800's..as entire families, though. I don't know what their purpose was, but I'll have to do a little more research on that family to find out.
As an aside, I have used the tags as well...to tag all my private people...that way I have quick access to who I have privatized (compeletely0 Donna -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Cathy Sent: July 5, 2005 10:07 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Tags Hi Donna, Not Jennie but also Australian Transportation of convicts from England is one of the main reasons that the British colonised Australia. They were transported for a whole variety of crimes - some in our eyes very minor. If you have a convict, you likely have a very early settler. Besides there are better records available for where they came from etc. Why not tag convicts? Besides that they are regarded as amongst the most interesting ancestors. I don't have any. My ancestors migrated as free settlers :-( - much harder to find their origins across the seas as some came before civil registration and censuses.
