You need to set the preferences separately on the Laptop, as they are not copied across with your backed up data files. (You could copy ther .usr files, but I find it easier to simply maintain the preferences separately.)
The new preferences for font should "stick" after you change them on the laptop. Try saving the data file (on the laptop) and make sure you exit Legacy normally.
