<< I wish to share only part of my family file with some members of the same
family. I wish to start with my paternal grandfather and include all of his
ancestors. If that isn't possible I could start with my father. I am using the
Standard version (latest build) and Windows XP Home. I've looked thru Tips and
the Mail Archives, but have not found exactly what I should do to accomplish
this. I copied the "Splitting Family Files" and "Share Legacy and Your Family
Files", but still haven't a clue. Can anyone give a computer dummy some explicit
instructions? >> MLP

All you had to do, Marilyn, was click on the *Help* Menu, within the package
itself.

The *instructions* copied from the Help Menu is appended below.

You can export a Legacy Family File to create another Legacy Family File or to
append to another, existing Family File. When exporting a Legacy Family File,
you can filter the outgoing records, limiting them to focus group entries or
tagged records only. Since you can tag an individual and all his/her ancestors
or descendants, this is a good way to break a large Family File into small, more
manageable pieces.

To export a Legacy File:

1. From the File menu, choose Export To / Legacy File...

2. Select a name for the Legacy file you want to create.

3. Choose the OK button.

4. Set or change any of the options. Each is described below.

5. When you are ready to export, click the START EXPORT button. Legacy exports
the file while displaying a progress bar.

Options

 Records to Export

All Records in the Entire Family File

Select this option if you want to include every individual and family in the new
Family File. Selecting this option causes all subsequent options to be ignored.

Selected Records Contained in the Focus Group

You can select specific individuals, families and entire family lines to export
by placing them in a Focus Group. (See Focus Groups for more information.)

All Individual Records with a Certain Tag Level

Select this option if you want to export only individuals who have been tagged.
Be sure to set the tag level you want to use by using the UP and DOWN arrows.

All Marriage Records with a Certain Tag Level

This option exports only those individuals who are part of tagged marriages. Be
sure to set the tag level you want to use by using the UP and DOWN arrows.

Link Individually Selected Parents and Children

When exporting individuals who have been either tagged or included in a Focus
Group, you can have Legacy do the extra work necessary to link related people
together. To do so, select this option.

Export Filters

Try to keep original ID numbers

Legacy tries to retain the original record numbers whenever possible. The only
reason they can't be used is if they are already being used by other records.)
If this option is unchecked, Legacy will still try to use the same ID numbers,
but if it can't, it won't bother telling you about it.

Format Names and Places

When exporting records to a different Family File, you can have all the names
and places formatted to the current format settings. This includes upper
casing, initial caps or leaving alone surnames, initial caps on given names, and
initial caps on locations.
