When you add an individual, Given Name, Surname, Prefix and Suffix are
recorded in 2 tables, tblIR and tblNX. When saving, a "flag" equal to 0
is automatically added to the record in tblNX.
If you Add anything in the four fields available from the Alternate
Names window, when saving, these "alternate" informations are recorded
and added in tblNX only and a "flag" equal to 1 is added to the record
in tblNX.
Eg: Starting with a new family file, if you add a New Individual named
Michel Lacoursiere and add Michel Rivard as an alternate name
tblIR has one record: Michel Lacoursiere
tblNX has 2 records: Michel Lacoursiere ("flag" = 0) and Michel Rivard
("flag" = 1).
When doing a search for "Alt. Given Name" or "Alt. Surname", only the
records in tblNX with a "flag" not equal to 0 are taken into
consideration. If your family file has 100 Individuals and none of these
individuals have alternate names, tblNX contains the name of those 100
individuals, all with a "flag" equal to 0.
If you do a Search for Alternate Surname equal to "blank" on that family
file, the result will be " no record found" because there is no records
in tblNX that have a "flag" not equal to 0. It will NOT result in a list
of 100 individuals.
If you have 5 Individuals in that file with Alt. Given Name and no Alt.
Surname, at the time of entry 5 records with a "flag" equal to 1, Given
Name equal to "whatever" and Surname equal to "blank" would have been
created in tblNX.
Doing a Search for Alternate Surname equal to "blank" would result in a
list of these 5 individuals since "flag" is not equal to 0 and the
Surname field is "blank".
In other words, when making a search for Alternate Given Name or
Alternate Surname, you are looking at individuals that actually have
alternate informations and ignoring all those without any alternate
informations.
( tblNX contains both, regular and alternate names, because it is the
table used when viewing the Name List with the option to Include
Alternate Names).
Hope this help,
Michel Lacoursière
