Why not just back up the original file and then restore it with a different name? The copy will be perfect, nothing lost, and when your editing is done, you can dump the old one and rename the new to whatever you want.

I am a big stickler for "sources" - I put nothing in until I get a source for that date or occasion. Will exporting into another file take everything with it, including my sources? Thank you for suggestion.

Assuming all the export bugs are fixed...

As long as you check the notorious "Override Source options" checkbox, your
sources will get exported. You must also select the correct options if you
click the "Customize..." button.

The best thing to do is to try an export, then turn around and import it into
a new database. Then check to see if everything you wanted came over.
