IGI Search -- double sources

Hi Bruce:
I've found that the new version 6 now only creates a single 'source detail
citation' for each fact or event that is copied over from the IGI record and
it will be in the form "citing microfilm 1553207 for batch 8812702, sheet
18, downloaded 5 Sep 2005" or with as much detail as is present in the IGI
record's source information. If none is present, then you will only get
"downloaded 5 Sep 2005", but it will only be a single detail citation.
Double citations are no longer happening and only a single citation is
necessary.

I've suggested that IGI Master Source entry also record the IGI version
number from the LDS search engine because both data updates and search
engine updates happen at the IGI site and more are planned within the next 6
to 12 months.

Remember that the IGI is a secondary (or index) source and not a primary
source, so all information from the IGI should be confirmed by a primary
source.

In using a source and citation, my preference is to have enough information
to be able to go back to that same source in the future to double check my
information (or allow another researcher to do the same). Currently, the
IGI search engine at familysearch.org DOES allow one to search by batch
number, but not down to the individual record. If the batch number is not
present, then you're out of luck. I was hoping that there could be an "IGI
record number" that could be recorded and searched for at the IGI to re-find
the same individual, however this is not possible at this time. I use the
"@" at the bottom of the "View Matches" screen to bring up the IGI record in
a browser window so I can see the full record. Then I can decide how much
of that "contextual information" I need for future reference. Doing a
separate search at the IGI site by batch number can produce some very
interesting results since it brings in all family members recorded at the
same time (although marriage summary lists are less helpful).

I hope this has been helpful in answering your question.

Back to my 2 Detail Source issue.

When I do an IGI search for an individual, and I find that an IGI
record has a date that I don't have in Legacy, I check the "radio"
button on the right (IGI) side and then click on "Update Legacy
Individual". The result is that when I look at the sources for that
person, I find TWO listings for EVERY date I updated. Both say
"International Genealogical Index(R)" in the Source List Name but the
Detail Source records are different. One Source Detail just contains
the date of the download, and the other Source Detail contains that
same date downloaded PLUS additional detail such as the film number
etc.

It seems that I could just delete the shorter Source Detail record as
the longer one has everything the shorter record has. But I wonder
why TWO Source Detail records get created EVERYTIME I update from the
IGI.

Thanks for any responses.
