Paula - I also use the Ahnentafel preceded by alpha characters. For my own ancestors, I have used several - Y for my father's York line, WA for his paternal grandmother's line (Williams ancestors), RR for my mother's ancestors (Richardson-Rand). For each of my husbands, son and daughter-in-laws, sister-in-laws, etc., I start a new line. That way I don't have to do any renumbering for my children and grandchildren.

I have also used these alpha characters for descendant lines, e.g. WD = Williams descendants, but not as part of a unique number..

Using these characters has been very helpful in my surname index on my web site. I know immediately which line the person belongs to. It has been particularly helpful when the same person appears in multiple lines.
